He won us the war, a war deemed un-winnable by everyone- was won outright! He deserves credit because he was the commander in chief at that time..
Despite mounting pressure he did not stop the war, and finished off a menace.
He is a career politician and not a novice. For Good or for worse he is no body’s puppet. He has proved that he is a man of substance in the past when he lobbied for human rights during the JVP violence.
He values freedom of religion and will ensure that Sri Lanka remains a sanctuary for Buddhists. Check this out..
He remained true to the nation’s interests even when pressure was mounting on him to not to finish off the eelamists.
He will not merge the northern and eastern provinces to create a “Tamil only” super-province.
He promises fiscal injections into the economy in the form of infrastructure development, which will increase the productive possibility frontier of the country.
Subsidising farmers will ensure food supplies and this also means that “if” Sri Lanka is to ever be under siege then it is of strategic importance to be self sufficient.
Reconstructing and maintaining ancient and relatively new water tanks will ensure that citizens have guaranteed sources of water. This will also make more water available for food production.
Hambantota harbour project is crucial if Sri Lanka is to compete with India’s “sethu-samudram” widening of the park straits. A Sri Lankan port at Hambantota will reap immense profits if India blockades Chinese and Sino-bound naval traffic through the park straits (maybe if a WW3 comes by, who knows..)
1, Agreed.
2. Agreed.
3. I think that was opportunistic. Premadasa did what he had to do.
4. He’s not politically as Buddhist as some may think.
5. Agreed.
6. Agreed, and very important. A distinguishing factor.
7. Agreed, but please don’t quote High school economics. Also, consider that many of these infrastructure projects were opposed by affected parties, some foreign governments, and others local businessmen. Therefore give him an additional point for balls.
8. Absolutely not. There must be a better use for that land. I don’t agree with subsidies. It comes out of our money, and it’s cheaper to import these foods.
9. Agreedand no. I don’t believe in self sufficiency in food. A dated idea.
10. Agreed.
7) I guess the “extra balls” point wins there my friend..
8/9) when Hitler started to sink Britain’s commercial fleets using u-boats, Britain faced severe food shortages..
